QT-ESL 69 Irregular Verbs Grp 4B

In this episode, we continue our intensive practice with irregular verbs presenting them in different groups, which makes it easier to memorize and learn them. First, there is a listen and repeat section followed by an exercise where the learner hears short sentences in the simple present and has to put them in the simple past tense.

If students learn these verbs properly and can use them correctly, then they will have no difficulty working with the story "Was It Love?" in which we plan to include more than 140 irregular verbs. Will we, here at QualityTime-ESL, be able to meet the challenge of placing all these verbs in one single story? That is the big question.

One last remark: doing this oral work is far more challenging than doing written exercises. QualityTime-ESL Podcasts are intended for hard-working learners who want to perfect their English and are willing to make the required effort.

QT-ESL 69 Irregular Verbs Group 4B

Hi there! I’m Marianne Raynaud, and I want to help you improve your level of spoken English. This series of podcasts is designed to help you master English grammar through oral practice. For work on vocabulary and pronunciation go to our other series called “Your English.”

With irregular verbs, we advise you to study their meanings in your language and then memorize the infinitive, the simple past and the past participle for each verb. To make learning less difficult, we have put the irregular verbs into groups.

Let’s work on some verbs in group 4 where the simple past and past participles are the same, but this time they end in “t,” “ck,” “n” or “ne.” The vowels also change so be careful with the pronunciation. Moreover, notice that “to get” has two possible past participles: “got” which is British English and “gotten” which is US English. Listen and repeat.

to get got got / gotten (US)
to lose lost lost
to sit sat sat
to spit spat/spit spat/spit
to shoot shot shot
to strike struck struck
to stick stuck stuck
to spin spun spun
to win won won
to shine shone shone

To practice some more, we’ll use these verbs in short sentences. I will say two sentences for each verb: one in the simple present and one in the simple past. Listen and repeat.

I get books on the Web.
I got books on the Web.
They lose weight easily.
They lost weight easily.
She sits in the front row.
She sat in the front row.
He spits in the street.
He spat in the street.
He shoots ducks in the hunt.
He shot ducks in the hunt.
The clock strikes five.
The clock struck five.
Satellites spin around the earth.
Satellites spun around the earth.
I stick labels on presents.
I stuck labels on presents.
He wins at many sports.
He won at many sports.
The sun shines 300 days.
The sun shone 300 days.

Now you will transform a sentence in the present to the simple past. Listen to the examples.

I say: I get books on the Web.
You say: I got books on the Web.
I say: They lose weight easily.
You say: They lost weight easily.

Now you go on in the same way. Be sure to speak before I give the answer. (Sentences above.)

The end of the script is in the PDF file.
