Your English 66 “Was It Love?” Pt 2

Level: B1-C1

"Chart of Irregular Verbs" is offered

We are hereby continuing our “Irregular Verb Challenge", which involves producing a story in episodes with 140+ useful irregular verbs that students often find tiresome to learn. We will be teaching these important verbs in context with oral exercises where the students do the speaking.

We intend to follow more or less our "Irregular Verb Chart" (cf. download below) which groups these verbs in the following categories:

  • Verbs where the simple past and the past particle are identical.
  • Verbs where the simple past and the past particle are different.
  • Verbs where the simple past and the past particle are both identical and the same as the infinitive.

"Chart of Irregular Verbs"

  • Chart in PDF with equivalents in French
    PDF - 172 kb
Irregular verb chart with French equivalents PDF
  • Chart in DOC with equivalents to be added in other languages
    Word - 212 kb
Irregular verb chart to customize DOC

My colleague Catherine Alhinc made up the different verb groups and added useful information on pronunciation to help you.

At the same time we will be offering oral exercises with the same verbs in our series QualityTime-ESL Podcasts as practice ahead of time for the story. Students who make the effort to work on these "introductory" exercises will find the story activity much easier and more enjoyable.

Moreover, we offer a script as well as an "ORAL" pair work exercise for each episode. We believe in intensive oral pair work where the whole class is speaking simultaneously, and these "ORAL" worksheets will help teachers organize such speaking activities where the whole class is involved.

Best,
Marianne

Was It Love? (2) - Story with Irregular Verbs of Groups 1 & 2

Hi. I’m Marianne Raynaud. Here we continue our challenge of including more than 140 irregular verbs in a single tale! If you find it difficult, first go to “QualityTime-ESL Podcasts” and work on the related exercises before returning to our story, which I hope you will enjoy.

Previously in “Was It Love?”… A young woman leads a quiet life. Her dogs leap with joy, and her children build paper planes to fly in the bedroom.

Now onto the last irregular verbs of groups 1 & 2 that we practiced in QualityTime-ESL Podcasts Nos. 61 and 63. Here are the first eight. Listen and repeat.

have - lay - make - pay - lend - deal - bend - mean

Listen and repeat the story in the present tense. (Irregular verbs are in bold.)

The young woman has a job in a restaurant. She lays the tables and makes the guests feel at home. This is a satisfying job for her as the owners pay her a good salary. They also deal in commerce and are very generous. They lend her money if necessary. They are good people. They bend no rules, and they mean well.

Listen and repeat the story in the simple past tense. (Irregular verbs are in bold.)

The young woman had a job in a restaurant. She laid the tables and made the guests feel at home. This was a satisfying job for her as the owners paid her a good salary. They also dealt in commerce and were very generous. They lent her money if necessary. They were good people. They bent no rules, and they meant well.

In the next exercise you will work as a “tense” interpreter, by putting the sentences I read into the simple past tense. Listen to the examples.

I say: She lays the tables.
You say: She laid the tables.
I say: She makes the guests feel at home.
You say: She made the guests feel at home.

Now you go on in the same way. Be sure to speak before I give the answer.

The young woman has a job in a restaurant.

She makes the guests feel at home.
